The NFL world is mourning the loss of Baltimore Ravens legend Jacoby Jones. The former wide receiver passed away peacefully at his New Orleans home Sunday, just three days after his 40th birthday.

Jacoby Jones blossomed on the field at the Division II program Lane College in Tennessee. He was a three-time All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player.

The Houston Texans drafted Jones in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Jones played five seasons with the Texans. He made his calling as a kickoff and punt returner. He returned three punts for touchdowns and another kickoff with Houston.

As a receiver, Jones had 11 touchdown receptions in a Texans uniform. He had a great deal of success with Houston. However, his legend grew while playing with the Baltimore Ravens.

Jacoby Jones the Baltimore Ravens Legend

As Raven, Jones returned four kickoffs for touchdowns. In 2012, his first season with Baltimore, Jones earned first-team All-Pro honors. He also was selected to the Pro Bowl that season.

His career year culminated with a series of highlight plays in the playoffs during the Ravens’ run to a Super Bowl title. The biggest play happened in the AFC Divisional Round, as Jones hauled a 70-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter against the Denver Broncos, recognized as the “Mile Miracle.”

Jones’ catch from quarterback Joe Flacco tied the game, sending the contest into overtime where the Ravens capped off the win.

Then at Super Bowl XLVII, Jones became the first player to catch a touchdown and return a kickoff for a touchdown in the championship game. He snagged a 56-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Then exploded for a 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the third quarter during the Ravens’ 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Jones played nine seasons in the NFL. Before finishing his career, he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers.

Jacoby Jones life outside of the NFL

His charisma kept him in the spotlight. In 2013, he competed in Dancing with the Stars. He partnered with Karina Smirnoff and finished in third place.

After he hung up his cleats for good, he ventured into coaching. He coached wide receivers collegiately for his alma mater, Lane College, from 2018-19. He also was a wide receivers coach at Calvert Hill College in 2020. Then, he became the tight ends coach at Morgan State in 2021 before coaching the wideouts at Alabama State for two seasons.

“We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones,” the Ravens said in a statement.

“I loved Jacoby Jones. We all did. His spirit, enthusiasm, and love for people were powerful. He was a light,” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said.

The tributes to Jones poured out from former teammates

“My brother, you will truly be missed… “You always gave back and always a pillar in the community, a Ravens for life (purple heart emoji). Love ya JJ,” Hall of Fame Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis posted on X.

“We have Momma Jones [and] Lil Coby’s back for life! This one hurt me, man! We are going to miss you!” Torrey Smith posted.

“Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I’ve ever been around,” former Houston Texans teammate JJ Watt wrote. “Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face. Gone far, far too soon.”

“He was one of my all-time favorites,” former Texans teammate Joel Dreessen posted on X. “We always tried to be the first one to celebrate with the other after scoring a TD. And he was always helping me refine my dance moves. The news this morning hurts badly. Love u Jacoby!”

“Jacoby Jones was one of the most energetic, and fun-loving teammates,” former Texans QB Matt Schaub shared. “Always had a smile on his face and never one to shy away from dancing. Blessed to have shared the huddle with you brother. Gone way [too] soon.”

The Jones family asked for your prayers, privacy, and support for his mother Emily, and son Jacoby as they navigate through this difficult time.

The Super Bowl is supposed to be a shining moment for NFL players. Unfortunately, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw had a brutal moment in the second quarter of Super Bowl LVIII.

CBS camera caught Greenlaw jumping around in excitement while waiting for a possession change after a punt by the Kansas City Chiefs. However, as Greenlaw went to run onto the field, he fell to the ground with an apparent non-contact, lower-body injury.

49ers trainers attended to the fallen Greenlaw as play resumed. After an initial trip to the blue medical tent, Greenlaw was carted from the sideline to the locker room for further evaluation.

The 49ers have ruled Greenlaw out for the remainder of the Super Bowl with an Achilles injury.

Dre Greenlaw has been a viable player in the 49ers defense. In his fifth season, he recorded 120 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 15 games. He entered Sunday’s Big Game with 15 tackles and two interceptions in San Francisco’s two playoff wins en route to Super Bowl LVIII.

Hendon Hooker expects to have his name called in the first round. That notion may come to fruition after the latest update on his torn ACL.

The former Tennessee quarterback looked primed to win the Heisman Trophy after leading the Volunteers to a No. 2 ranking late into the 2022 season. However, a torn ACL against South Carolina on Nov. 19 ended Hooker’s Heisman bid and season.

Despite the injury, Hendon Hooker has got a lot of first-round attention. He’s mature at 25 years old. He’s played in two types of offenses, starting his collegiate career at Virginia Tech. His numbers at Tennessee, playing in the Southeastern Conference, were astronomical — 58 touchdowns and five interceptions in two seasons.

The only hiccup is the ACL injury. However, those concerns may have been calmed. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Hooker’s doctor, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, sent every NFL team a letter stating the QB is on track to be available the first weekend of the 2023 season.

Shortly after the report, Hooker posted a video of him doing dropbacks for the first time since his surgery.

The expectation was for Hooker to redshirt his rookie season. And any team that drafts him this weekend may have the same strategy. Yet, his fast recovery does speed up his development clock. If he can be active on the practice field next season, that’s a huge lift.

Hendon Hooker has (-150) odds to get selected in the first round, per DraftKings. He looks like a first-round pick at 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds. He’s intelligent and has a cannon arm.

Hooker met with several intriguing teams, including the Washington Commanders and New York Giants. The Commanders have stressed their love for Sam Howell as starting quarterback. The Giants just re-signed their quarterback Daniel Jones to a mega four-year deal. Yet, the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans, who have two first-round selections, are teams likely to select him.

Two new head coach hirings emerged Tuesday. First, reports surfaced that the Denver Broncos finalized a deal with the New Orleans Saints to acquire Sean Payton as their head coach. Shortly afterward, reports emerged the Houston Texans are hiring DeMeco Ryans as their head coach.

The timing of the hirings seemed coincidental. But one report emerged the two hires were linked.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Broncos traded their 2023 first-round draft pick and 2024 second-round pick for Payton and the Saints 2024 third-round pick.

Payton becomes the fourth head coach traded in NFL history. However, there are conflicting reports that Payton wasn’t the Broncos’ first choice.

According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Broncos made a last-ditch attempt to hire Ryans. But Ryans stayed committed to the Texans, forcing the Broncos to move on and land Payton.

Schefter refuted the report, stating the Broncos made no contact with Ryans this week and were “zeroed” in on Payton all along.

Both Schefter and Rapoport are well-respected. There is no reason for either to make up a report. The conflicting reports may very well be a case of a battle of sources. Rapoport relayed the information he gathered from his source(s). Schefter then shared his information that happened to contradict Rapoport.

Ryans emerged as a top candidate after his marvelous work the last two seasons as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator. The 49ers’ defense ranked first in yards and points allowed, as well as second in takeaways.

Ryans signed a six-year deal with the Texans. The 49ers were beaten in the NFC Championship by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Now, Ryans returns to the team that drafted him in 2006 as a head coach.

Before Ryans’s surge, Payton was considered the top head coach candidate. He interviewed with several teams before landing in Denver. Payton gets tasked with refining a Broncos offense led by quarterback Russell Wilson after a disastrous season under Nathaniel Hackett.

Payton comes in with an impeccable resume. He won a Super Bowl with the Saints. He also helped to redefine quarterback Drew Brees into a future Hall of Fame player. If Rapoport is correct, Payton is a great consolation prize for the Broncos.

For the second straight year, the Dallas Cowboys’ season ends with a head-scratching final play against the San Francisco 49ers. Last year, the clock literally ran out on Dak Prescott and the Cowboys against the 49ers in the wild-card round. This year’s loss in the divisional round wasn’t as dramatic, but it was just as baffling and comical.

Trailing 19-12 with six seconds and no timeouts from their own 24, the Cowboys didn’t have much to work for a last-ditch effort. So, Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore got creative.

First, running back Ezekiel Elliott lined up ineligible on the play at center. Dallas didn’t have anyone else on the line. Elliott snapped the football to Prescott, and disaster struck immediately afterward.

Elliott got flattened by 49ers linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair. Prescott threw a pass KaVonte Turpin, and Turpin got immediately drilled, ending the game. It appeared Dallas was looking for Turpin to get spacing so he could lateral the football.

But 49ers safety Jimmie Ward ended the play immediately with the pop.

The reaction on Twitter was just as expected:

On a night that Prescott threw two bad interceptions, and kicker Brett Maher missed his fifth extra point of the postseason, the amazement of the Cowboys’ poorly-executed final play took some attention and steam from the factors that led to the loss.

From the snap, the play stunk. The play put an exclamation point on the evening for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys are now free for a trip to Cabo. Meanwhile, the 49ers advance to next Sunday’s NFC Championship at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in the first quarter of Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin’s heartbeat got restored on the field before being transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is sedated and in critical condition. The Bills provided an update early Tuesday morning.

Hamlin collided with Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. The hit looked routine. However, after Hamlin stood up, he collapsed on the field. Players from both teams immediately waved for the Bills” training staff.

The frantic nature of the players and medics laminated how serious the situation was for Hamlin. CPR was administered on the field. Players from both teams looked on cautiously. Some knelt in prayers. Others broke down in tears.

A hush surrounded the stadium as ESPN’s broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman struggled through informing viewers what had occurred.

Hamlin was eventually loaded in an ambulance and transported to the same hospital where other NFL players, Tua Tagovailoa and Ryan Shazier were taken after their serious injuries.

The Bills and Bengals returned to their respective locker rooms before the NFL postponed the game. ESPN mentioned the teams may be given a five-minute warmup period before resuming the game. However, NFL Executive Vice President Troy Vincent said the league never discussed a warmup period.

The Bills and Bengals game was pivotal for the AFC playoff standings. Buffalo needs a win to move back to the No. 1 seed in the AFC and receive a bye in the wild-card round. A Cincinnati win would move the Bengals into second place and give them a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs, who are currently the AFC’s top seed.

None of that matters for now. The focus of the Bills and the NFL is on the health of Hamlin.

A sixth-round draft pick in 2021 out of Pittsburgh, Damar Hamlin started 14 games this season. He entered Monday’s game with 91 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.

The National Football League held a conference call with the media a few hours after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field in the first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals Monday.

NFL executives Jeff Miller and Troy Vincent spoke in length with the media on the league’s behalf. Medics administered CPR on Hamlin as players from both teams looked on frantically.

Eventually, Hamlin got transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center after more than 15 minutes. The league later postponed the game after both teams returned to their respective locker rooms.

Vincent said neither head coaches nor any players spoke about resuming the game.

“It was really about Damar,” Vincent said, per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. “Look, I’ve never seen anything like it, so immediately my player hat went on.”

Vincent added both head coaches took control of their locker room.

“It was fluid, and things were changing by the minute,” Vincent added. “Emotions were extremely high. It was a very volatile situation.”

Through the confusion after Hamlin was taken off the field, there was speculation that the teams would have a five-minute warmup period to resume the game. However, Vincent clarified that there was never talk of a five-minute warmup period or any other timeframe.

“It never crossed our mind to talk about warming up to resume play. That’s ridiculous, that’s insensitive. That’s not a place we should ever be in,” Vincent continued, per Garafolo.

Miller added that the league’s emergency action plan was enacted with Hamlin. Each stadium has one that involves an ambulance at every game and a Level 1 trauma center.

The NFL released a statement late Monday night that Hamlin was in critical condition.

Vincent and Miller did not provide an update. Neither has the hospital nor Hamlin’s agent, Ira Turner.

Whether the game is resumed is unclear. The Bills planned to fly back to Orchard Park, New York. However, some players are staying in Cincinnati.

The Miami Dolphins were one of the many stops Ryan Fitzpatrick made during his 17-year NFL career. He spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Dolphins. It was the 2020 season he served as a mentor to first-round draft pick Tua Tagovailoa.

Before he signed with Washington and his career abruptly ended due to a hip injury, Fitzpatrick spent every day of the 2020 season in the quarterback room with Tagovailoa.

During Thursday night’s game between the Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals, Tagovailoa got stretchered off the field after a scary hit. Fitzpatrick, who is now an analyst for Amazon Prime for TNF broadcast, became emotional while speaking about the injury to his “brother” Tagovailoa.

“We’ve all played a lot of football, but that’s one of the toughest scenes I think I’ve ever seen,” Fitzpatrick said (h/t Fansided). “For him, as a brother, getting to spend a few hours with him last night, he’s as happy as I’ve ever seen him. To see him do that, get knocked out, go limp, whatever it was, and you can feel it not just with the fans, but both teams. That was a scary scene. As a player, you’ve got to move on, you’ve got to play the game. As an announcer, analyst, I’m having a tough time right now.”

The Dolphins announced that Tagovailoa was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with head and neck injuries. He was conscious and had movement in all of his extremities. He will be discharged from the hospital and travel back with the Dolphins to Miami.

That is great news considering how bad the situation looked, considering the circumstance surrounding Tagovailoa’s health entering the week. Concern was visible from both teams, fans at the game in Cincinnati, and the media. Fitzpatrick had difficulty viewing his former teammate carted off the field.

Three days before one of the more whacky first Sundays of the NFL season in recent memory, Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills were serving notice to the league, dismantling the Los Angeles Rams, the defending Super Bowl champions. Every team in the AFC is looking up to the Bills early on.

Meanwhile, the Week 1 results laminated just how wide open the NFC appears. But, there seem to be two teams that show promise of pulling away from the pack.

1. Buffalo Bills (1-0)

The Bills lived up to the preseason hype by winning impressively against the Rams on the road. Josh Allen kickstarted his MVP campaign, and Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis torched Jalen Ramsey and the Rams’ zone defense.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (1-0)

Patrick Mahomes didn’t need Tyreek Hill to shred the Arizona Cardinals. Mahomes threw for 360 yards and tossed five touchdowns. There are still questions about the defense, but questions about Mahomes are slowly fading away.

3. Los Angeles Chargers (1-0)

Justin Herbert is manifesting into one of the elite quarterbacks in the league. He navigated through losing Keenan Allen to injury, throwing three touchdowns in the Chargers’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Meanwhile, the Chargers’ defense closed out the win with three interceptions and six sacks, including three by Khalil Mack.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0)

Tom Brady and the Buccaneers’ offense weren’t their best Sunday night against the Cowboys. But the defense flexed their muscles. What a difference a year makes. Last season the defense was banged. At full strength this season, that unit could re-establish its dominance from two years ago when the Bucs won the Super Bowl.

5. Minnesota Vikings (1-0)

Playing Aaron Rodgers brings out the best in Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins. Meanwhile, Justin Jefferson is staking his claim as the league’s best wide receiver. The Vikings are undergoing a culture change led by new head coach Kevin O’Connell. That could make a huge difference from past years.

6. Los Angeles Rams (0-1)

Matthew Stafford had tunnel vision last Thursday night. All he saw was Cooper Kupp. For the Rams to contend for a second straight Super Bowl title, their offense needs to open up to include Allen Robinson. Sean McVay will figure it out.

7. Philadelphia Eagles (1-0)

Don’t get too wrapped in the 38-35 score in the Eagles’ win over the Detroit Lions. Instead, focus on  Jalen Hurts threw for 243 while rushing for 90 and a touchdown. Prized free agent signing A.J. Brown still got his catches with 10 for 155 yards. Miles Sanders gained 96 yards on the ground, and the Eagles had four rushing touchdowns.

8. New Orleans Saints (1-0)

Even with Sean Payton gone, the Saints are one of the most dangerous NFC teams. The Saints gave Jameis Winston a plethora of weapons to use. Their receiving corps may be the league’s best with Jarvis Landry, Michael Thomas, and rookie Chris Olave. And they still have Taysom Hill as a Swiss-Army knife.

9. Baltimore Ravens (1-0)

Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews may have some help in the passing game. The wide receiver trio of Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay, and Demarcus Robinson flashed promise in Week 1 against the New York Jets. They could make Jackson and the Ravens’ offense harder to defend.

10. Indianapolis Colts (0-0-1)

Matt Ryan threw for 352 yards; Jonathan Taylor rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown, and Michael Pittman Jr. had nine catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Yet, the Colts settled for a tie against the woeful Houston Texans. It appears Rodrigo Blankenship is owner Jim Irsay’s latest fall guy.

11. Miami Dolphins (1-0)

Mike McDaniels got his first NFL head coaching win, and the Dolphins continued their dominance of the New England Patriots in South Florida. Also, Tyreek Hill looked at home with his new quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

12. Green Bay Packers (0-1)

Aaron Rodgers and Co. opened the season with a dud for the second consecutive year. Last year they proved to be okay after getting crushed by the Saints. However, this year feels different. First, the Vikings are in the same division. Plus, they have a huge piece missing, Davante Adams, who is now in Las Vegas.

13. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0)

The Steelers opened the season with a win over the Cincinnati Bengals. But the victory came with a price. The Steelers’ defense forced five turnovers in the team’s win over the defending AFC champions. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky delivered his first game-winning drive as a Steeler. Yet, T.J. Watt’s pectoral injury has everyone’s attention.

14. Cincinnati Bengals (0-1)

Joe Burrow looked like a quarterback who didn’t get a lot of reps during training camp as he recovered from appendix surgery. He had all five of the Bengals turnovers, including four interceptions, and he still almost rallied his team to victory.

15. Las Vegas Raiders (0-1)

It’s easy to overreact to the Raiders’ season-opening loss to the Chargers. But keep in mind that it was the first of six AFC West battles. Davante Adams looked like he did in Green Bay with ten catches, 141 yards, and a touchdown. Head coach Josh McDaniels and quarterback Derek Carr will smooth things out.

16. Washington Commanders (1-0)

The Commanders experienced the full Carson Wentz effect in his Washington debut against the Jaguars. He nearly threw the game away with back-to-back interceptions. Then, he regrouped and rallied the Commanders to victory with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

17. San Francisco 49ers (0-1)

The Trey Lance era in San Francisco was a washout. He’ll get a redo next week at home against the Seattle Seahawks. Hopefully, he does so he can fend off the “Jimmy G” chants.

18. Arizona Cardinals (0-1)

The Cardinals looked ill-prepared to play the Chiefs. Mahomes carved the Cardinals’ defense into pieces. Kyler Murray once again looked as if he missed DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins will be out another five games, so Murray and the Cardinals must figure out how to win without their star wide receiver.

19. Seattle Seahawks (1-0)

Life without Russell Wilson started off great for the Seahawks by beating Wilson and his new team on Monday Night Football. Now Wilson’s successor, Geno Smith, will have to continue the magic beyond the emotional season-opener.

20. Cleveland Browns (1-0)

No matter who the quarterback is, the Browns can run the football. They amassed 217 rushing yards in their win over the Carolina Panthers. Even Jacoby Brissett is an upgrade from injured Baker Mayfield.

21. Denver Broncos (0-1)

Let Russ Cook! Russell Wilson went back into the future in his return to Seattle. Nathaniel Hackett overshadowed the night with his coaching decision blunder. Call it a rookie mistake, but Monday night’s gaffe stirs doubt about his longevity as a head coach.

22. Detroit Lions (0-1)

In defeat, the Lions showed their toughness and resilience. They also displayed how talented they are on offense. Quarterback Jared Goff has a strong group of skilled position players, including running back D’Andre Swift, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark, and Josh Reynolds, as well as tight end T.J. Hockenson.

23. New England Patriots (0-1)

Four extra days in South Florida still didn’t help the Patriots’ cause against the Dolphins. Now they’re on to Pittsburgh. Another loss could put them on the path of a long season.

24. Tennessee Titans (0-1)

Are the Titans regressing? The loss of AJ Brown and a home loss to the hapless Giants would suggest they are.

25. Chicago Bears (1-0)

The Bears made a splash with their win over the 49ers. Still, quarterback Justin Fields and first-time head coach Matt Eberflus have a lot to correct to prove Sunday’s win was no fluke.

26. New York Giants (1-0)

Brian Daboll was one of several coaches to win their head coach debut in Week 1. Unlike Nathaniel Hackett, Daboll bet on his playcalling and quarterback Daniel Jones by going for and converting a go-ahead two-point conversion to beat the Titans.

27. Dallas Cowboys (0-1)

The Cowboys find a way to be the Cowboys. Desperation has set in, and now they’re going to try to rush Dak Prescott back within the next four weeks after having thumb surgery.

28. Houston Texans (0-0-1)

At least the Texans didn’t lose, right? Lovie Smith’s first game as Houston’s head coach looked well assured. Then his team blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead and had to settle for a 20-20 tie against the Colts.

29. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1)

Self-inflicting wounds cost the Jaguars in Week 1 against the Commanders. Jacksonville had three red zone trips and came away with just three points. Then the defense allowed two touchdown passes from Carson Wentz to lose.

30. Carolina Panthers (0-1)

The Baker Mayfield revenge game didn’t go his way. Instead, his era with the Panthers started with a deflating loss to his former team, the Browns. Can Mayfield channel his energy and focus going forward after failing to beat his old team?

31. Atlanta Falcons (0-1)

The Falcons are the epitome of the late Dennis Green’s declaration, “They’re exactly who we thought they were.” It doesn’t matter the head coach or quarterbacks, the Falcons find a way to blow leads. They had a 26-10 fourth-quarter lead against the Saints to lose 27-26.

32. New York Jets (0-1)

The Jets may have won the offseason with the talent they brought in. However, all of it is wasted with Joe Flacco starting over Mike White at quarterback while Zach Wilson is injured. At least Robert Saleh is keeping receipts.

The Dallas Cowboys not only lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19-3 Sunday night, but they may also have lost their franchise quarterback for some time. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones informed reporters Dak Prescott suffered “an injury above his joint in his thumb,” and will require surgery, according to the Washington Post’s Mark Maske.

However, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy wasn’t quick to rush to judgment about Prescott’s injury.

“Once we get all the facts, we’ll get that to you,” McCarthy said, per Maske. “He hasn’t even seen a doctor yet.”

Prescott exited the loss in the fourth quarter after his hand made contact with Shaquille Barrett’s hand, as the Buccaneers outside linebacker tried to bat the football down.

McCarthy’s reaction as he walked onto the field following the final seconds says it all.

Prescott finished the game 14-of-29 passing for a pedestrian 134 yards and an interception. The Cowboys were the only NFC East team to lose in Week 1. The Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, and New York Giants each won the first Sunday of the season.

The Cowboys play the Cincinnati Bengals, at the Giants (Monday Night Football), Commanders, at the Los Angeles Rams, at the Eagles and Lions in the next six weeks.
